ECP accepts Miftah's request, Orders recount in NA-249 for tomorrow

ISLAMABAD/LAHORE/KARACHI: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Tuesday accepted PMLN candidate Miftah Ismail s application ordering recount in NA-249 Karachi on May 6.
The Commission had on Saturday issued a stay order, withholding the results of NA-249, Karachi by-elections. The stay order was issued on the application of PMLN candidate Miftah Ismail, seeking recount.
The Commission directed the contestants to reach the office of returning officer (RO) at 9am on May 6 for the recount. Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, a four-member bench conducted the hearing. Miftah s counsel argued that the signatures of presiding officers (POs) of 167 polling stations were missing on Form-45, while the party s polling agents were also not given Form-46. ISLAMABAD: The Chairman Pakistan People’s Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, said on Tuesday the PPP will consider going to the ECP for recounting on all seats from 2018 onwards where the difference between the votes of the winners and losers was just 5 percent. He was reacting to the ECP’s decision of re-counting in the NA-249 bypolls.
Reacting through his twitter account on Tuesday, Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto tweeted: “PPP welcomes new precedent set by allowing constituency wide recount without specific polling station complaints.” He complained that election results of many seats from 2018 fell within 5pc threshold, but candidates were not given a chance, but with the new ECP order the PPP will consider approaching ECP for recounts on all such seats. ....

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday ordered a vote recount in the NA-249 constituency of Karachi as it accepted the request of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which lost the by-election by a wafer-thin margin of fewer than 700 votes.
The ECP, in a statement, directed the relevant political parties to be present before the Returning Officer at 9.00am on May 6 (tomorrow), where the recounting would be held. The recount would encompass all the polling stations in the constituency.
Ismail had lost to Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) Qadir Khan Mandokhel by 683 votes in the April 29 by-election, after which the PML-N leader wrote to the chief election commissioner requesting a recount. Election rules allow for a recount when the margin of victory is within five per cent. ....
